Wagner Women Sign Two High School Cagers Wagner College's youth movement got a boost on Friday when head basketball coach Gela
Mikalauskas announced the signing National Letters of Intent of two high school seniors who will "compete" for starting spots next season. From the best team in Georgia comes the third-best player (the other two verbally committed to Tennessee) in 6-4 Emily Adams of Buford HS and out of Shaker Heights (Ohio) HS is 5-7 sharpshooter Jordyn Peck. "These young ladies will compete right away," said Mikalauskas, who has five freshmen on the current roster and could be starting three of them before the season is out. "They are presently making big impacts on their high school seasons and performed very well in AAU." Adams was a part of three consecutive Class AA state championship teams. Last season, the Wolves sported a 29-3 record, including a 16-1 mark in Class 6-AA Division while copping the 6-AA Region championship. The Cummings, Ga. product, who got serious looks from Fordham and Mt. St. Mary's, was a day away from committing to LaSalle when she and her family got in the car and drove to Staten Island to see the Wagner College campus. Adams held from signing with the Philadelphia school and, after her official visit to Wagner in September, called Mikalauskas and said she would be wearing the Seahawk colors. Competing in a nationally ranked program, Adams has a comfortable 15-foot jumper but what caught the eye of Wagner assistant and recruiting coordinator Brett Self was her ability to rebound and be a physical presence in the paint at both ends of the floor. “Emily is an eager student of the game and playing at a great high school program; we know that she is going to continue to get better,” added Mikalauskas. “She’s got a great touch around the basket and is a very physical post player. As a freshman coming in she’ll be replacing Kelly Clark, our outgoing senior, so we’re very happy to have Emily join the program.” Peck is going to make plenty of fans at the Spiro Center. The southpaw is a fearless, unflappable guard who is putting up big numbers. "Jordyn's got swagger and she's a real find," explained Mikalauskas. Mikalauskas and assistant Jen Derevjanik found the diamond in the rough when they were scouting a post player during an AAU game in Washington, D.C. "Her (Cleveland Crush) team was down by about 15 points at halftime, and we were about to leave," recalled Mikalauskas. "All of a sudden this kid (Peck) starts throwing in threes from all over the place. The girl guarding her is in her face but she just steps back and fires. The (college) coaches are now all leaning forward in amazement and she continued to dazzle us." Derevjanik, a former pro who won an WNBA championship with Phoenix Mercury, made the call to Peck, who is a BIG WNBA fan. She and Derevjanik, to say the least, hit it off. It was all over but the signing. Known for her deep-shooting prowess, Peck will be expected to infuse the Seahawks on the offensive end. As a junior at Shaker Heights, the talented lefty averaged 17.3 points, 2.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.9 three-pointers per game while being named to the 2010-11 Associated Press Special Mention All-Ohio Team. In helping lead her team to an 18-5 record as a junior, the Shaker Heights resident also earned First-Team All-Lake Erie League honors. The multi-skilled Peck has a propensity to score points in bunches. This trait was never more on display than against Toldeo Waites HS when she drained eight first-half three-pointers en route to a 33-point game. A U.S. Junior National All-Star in four consecutive AAU tournaments, Peck tossed in 36 consecutive points for the Crush on her way to a summer-high 42-point outing. “Jordyn is a very athletic combo guard who can score in a variety of ways. She’s got deceptive three-point range,” said Mikalauskas. “Just when you think she can’t shoot it from any further, she steps back she shoots another one. Her ability to score from three will really help. We’ll have three senior guards next year with (Kanifa Hicks, Marie-Laurence Archambault, Veronick Fournier) and we’ll be looking to have that replacement come in and impact our program. I think Jordyn Peck can be an impact player for us at the guard position because she is a high-scoring guard.” Danae La Trise Rock Signs With Lourdes College _______________________________________________________________
